Saving San Salvador’s Iguanas

The Bahamas is home to several species of iguanas, but some are doing better than others. In an effort to help the San Salvador iguana population, Seacology and CIBC FirstCaribbean Bank teamed up to fund the San Salvador Iguana Conservation Centre. The Centre is located at Gerace Research Center, and overseen by Professor William Hayes of Loma Linda University. Local conservation organization San Salvador’s Living Jewels is involved with education efforts and raising awareness of the importance of habitat conservation to the iguana’s future.  A Loggerhead Productions(production).

Swimming Turtle

What’s so Great about Turtles?

A video that answers this important question from the mind of a Bahamian high school student!  Following the 2009 ban of the capture of any turtles, many Bahamians were outraged. Brought to you by Friends of the Environment, Loggerhead Productions and James Boyce, winner of Abaco’s 2010 Wild & Scenic student film contest.

Birding Bahamas: Piping Plovers

They close beaches for their nests in the US, but in The Bahamas Piping Plovers are just on vacation. Birding guide Ricky Johnson takes us on a search for these teeny-tiny birds. And we’re not the only ones looking for them. The Bahamas National Trust and volunteers from the  National Audubon Society were counting them on our beaches this winter to find out how many were here.
